He Is Someone Who Assures Us

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God . . . -Romans 8:15-16 (NKJV)

If you’ve been a believer for any length of time, you’ve probably experienced a bout with doubt regarding your relationship to God. Perhaps you blew it, and you figured there’s no way in the world God would want anything to do with you. Maybe you had an encounter with a staunch skeptic who challenged and questioned every conceivable point of your Christian faith. Or could it be that in the weakness of your flesh you started entertaining questions like, Lord, do I really belong to you? Are you even listening to me?

It’s during these seasons of doubt that the Holy Spirit steps in and fills us with the assurance we so desperately need. The Bible says that the Spirit personally bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. He sets us straight and resets our relational compass by pointing our hearts toward His perfect presence. Our conscience is cleansed, our inner man is strengthened, and we’re refreshed with a renewed sense of the loving bonds that drew us to Jesus in the first place. We cry “Abba, Father” and enjoy refuge in the very relationship that we previously questioned.

Yes, there will be times when we blow it. There will be times when our faith will be tested by the unbelief of others. And we can count on the fact that our flesh will sow seeds of skepticism into our hearts. Thankfully, God’s Holy Spirit is infinitely greater than the sum of our insecurities-and so is His ability to assure us amidst our bouts with doubt.

For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. (1 John 3:20 NKJV)

And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. (1 John 3:24 NKJV)
